RESOLUTION OF THE SENATE

OF

THE ASSOCIATED STUDENTS OF MONTANA STATE UNIVERSITY

Adopted 29 November 2018

Whereas, The members of the United States Armed Forces have delayed entry into academia in order to, not only, serve and defend the nation, but also to gain valuable knowledge and life experiences that are directly translatable to academia and civilian life as a whole; and,

Whereas, A veteran’s service history has been qualified into civilian equivalent credits through the American Council on Education via the Joint Services Transcript or the Community College of the Air Force as part of the application for Veterans’ Administration benefits; and,

Whereas, Montana’s current veteran population is 98,386, comprising nearly ten percent of the state’s total population; and,

Whereas, The development of a process to translate military service to meaningful college credits would give Montana State University an advantage in veteran recruitment, retention, and graduation rate by recognizing the value of a veteran’s service, decreasing the time required to complete a veteran’s degree, and lowering potential debt load; and,

Whereas, Such improvements in veteran recruitment, retention, and graduation rate will directly affect the success of Choosing Promise: Montana State University’s Strategic Plan: Intentional Focus 1: Goal 1.1: Metrics 1 “Enrollment of students who are economically disadvantaged, first generation, veterans, adult learners, individuals with disabilities, and from underrepresented races and ethnicities will increase in each group’s share of the student body by two points by 2024.” And Metrics 6 “Montana State University will increase retention (from 72% to 85%) and six-year graduation (from 48% to 60%) rates for all incoming Montana State students and will reduce disparities for students who are economically disadvantaged, first generation, veterans, adult learners, individuals with disabilities, and from underrepresented races and ethnicities by 2024.”; and,

Whereas, Such a process could be implemented and utilized throughout the Montana University System allowing Montana State University to continue its tradition of leading from the front; now, therefore, let it be

Resolved, That the Associated Students of Montana State University support and encourage the development of a process that allows our military veterans to translate their history of service into meaningful Montana State University credits.
